Filipino electro-rock act Stereodeal is back with a new single and a new sound. After independently releasing their debut album ‘Singularity’ in 2015 and reissuing it in 2018 under Warner Music Philippines, they return with the dreamily epic new single “Lights Out”: an ode to the stars as the beacon of mankind’s hopes and dreams. One part Madonna, one part Phil Collins, and all parts Carl Sagan, “Lights Out” channels 80s musical nostalgia as the band implores listeners to look up and take a collective leap into the future amidst the darkness surrounding the world.
Formed in 2008, the band is constantly likened to acts such as Muse, Depeche Mode, and Placebo. While they do not deny it, these influences go beyond music—some of which include anything from comic books to theoretical physics to mundane life situations to romance. This range and depth of source material for the band ensures they won’t be running out of steam, creatively speaking, anytime soon. Interestingly, they are able to fuse all these influences to create a distinct sound that is both alien and familiar, not to mention layered, rich, and uncompromising. The penchant for romanticizing the scientific and grounding concepts considered cosmic and out of reach has been part of the Stereodeal’s ethos as seen in “Singularity,” and that is one thing that drives the band forward.
The band is currently comprised of:
ADRIAN ARCEGA (vocals, guitar, synths, and programming) – the ringleader of the band’s musical and creative direction, Adrian’s career in the Filipino music scene spans two decades, starting from his stint with critically-acclaimed and Gawad CCP Award-winning indie band The Purplechickens. He counts U2, Depeche Mode, New Order, and Radiohead as his influences.
DAX GONZAGA (bass, bass synths) – the other long-time member of the group, Dax has also performed with various groups in the scene, and was known for being part of the major label act CUBE. He has also musically collaborated with local filmmaker Jerrold Tarrog on a number of occasions, and is heavily influenced by the playing of Flea and Jaco Pastorius.
PETER TOLIBAS (drums, programming) – the firecracker in the band, Peter–a long-time friend of Adrian from college–joined the band in 2017. While he is known for his thunderous approach to the skins with his stint in noise-rock band Ginseng Pilipinas, he has also sessioned for The Purplechickens and Ang Bandang Shirley. In Stereodeal he brings both his raw firepower and a deliberate approach to electronic music.
Stereodeal’s new single “Lights Out” was recorded at Filipino music legend Ely Buendia’s Crow’s Nest Studio, and produced by Adrian Arcega and Audry Dionisio (who also engineered, mixed, and mastered the track). Also featured on the track is the band’s friend and constant collaborator Japo Anareta (a.k.a. Robot Jaworski of Tanya Markova).
